Rooted in a rich legacy dating back to 1945, our Society was born from a tradition of resilience and intellectual courage. Founded by Dr. Lewis Wolberg and a pioneering community of psychoanalysts—many of whom fled Europe after WWII—our Institute became a haven for innovative clinical training and trauma-informed care. It was among the first psychoanalytic institutes to welcome psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers alike.
As the field evolved, so did we. In 1981, our graduates came together to create the Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Society—a dynamic, forward-thinking community committed to preserving excellence while embracing change. When other institutions shifted course, we doubled down on high-quality training, interdisciplinary learning, and collegial support.
Today, our Society continues to foster the same spirit of innovation, diversity of thought, and mentorship that defined our origins.
