Laying the Foundation for Psychoanalytic Understanding and Clinical Growth
The One-Year Introductory Program in Psychotherapy is designed for individuals who are interested in exploring the foundations of psychoanalytic theory and clinical thinking. This program is ideal for licensed mental health professionals, graduate students in related fields, and those considering a deeper commitment to psychoanalytic training.
Over the course of three trimesters, participants engage in a structured overview of major psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theories, with a focus on unconscious phenomena and processing, human motivation, and patterns of unconscious defense and adaptation. The curriculum draws from classical and modern Freudian thought, object relations, self psychology, and relational approaches, offering students a comprehensive introduction to the psychoanalytic tradition.

Program Structure

Three 10-week trimesters of weekly seminars (typically evenings to accommodate working professionals)

Clinical Integration
While this is primarily an academic and theoretical program, participants are encouraged to bring their clinical experiences into the classroom for reflection and discussion.

Case consultation is available to interested students but is not required for program completion

Personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy is strongly recommended to strengthen self-awareness and understanding of unconscious processes, though also not required
Completion & Advancement
Upon successful completion of all coursework, participants will receive a Letter of Completion recognizing their commitment and learning. Graduates of the Introductory Program become eligible to apply for the Institute’s Two-Year Certificate Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
This seamless progression allows students to build on their foundational knowledge and continue developing clinical and theoretical skills in a supportive, intellectually vibrant community.
